We are delighted to announce the introduction of Family Dining at Filton Avenue Primary School, starting with pupils in Years 3 to 6. This new lunchtime approach supports our commitment to fostering a calm, inclusive, and respectful school culture where every child feels a strong sense of belonging.

Family Dining provides a structured, sociable mealtime where children sit in groups with their classes and converse meaningfully over their food and drinks, similar to a family setting. This not only helps to develop good table manners and respectful behaviour but also encourages positive relationships across year groups.

An important feature of Family Dining is the role of the Table Manager. This rotating role gives pupils the opportunity to take on responsibility by helping to serve water, hand out cutlery, support others at the table, help to tidy up and model positive behaviour. Through this, children are developing essential life skills such as leadership, collaboration, and independence.

Family Dining also provides a meaningful opportunity to develop oracy skills. Children are encouraged to engage in conversation, listen actively, and express themselves clearly and respectfully. Each lunchtime ends with the sharing of our school mantra, helping to reinforce our core values and promote a shared sense of purpose and community.

To further develop our sense of community at lunchtimes, teachers will join the children for Family Dining twice each term.

We are already seeing the benefits of Family Dining in our Key Stage 2 classes and look forward to rolling it out to younger year groups as the year progresses.

Together, we are building a lunchtime culture that reflects our school’s values and helps every child to thrive – both in and out of the classroom.

Packed Lunches
We like children to eat healthily. The right kind of food will help the brain to learn and the body to feel energetic. A suggested packed lunch would contain a sandwich/pasta, two pieces of fruit. Water is always available for all children during lunchtime.
